Welcome to the Land of Peace and Harmony
Let us welcome you to the land that has attracted man since ancient times with its natural abundance, cultural variety, excellent wines, and friendly people. Welcome to the land dominated by rocks of limestone glaring white and mirrored in the calm waters of the Novomlynske Reservoirs, by the spectacular architectural design of the ancient town of Mikulov, and the wine cellars so typical of this region.

The honor granted to this landscape in 1986, when it was made a member of the exclusive society of the UNESCO biosphere reserves, is also owed to man who has reshaped and beautified this region for centuries. Be it those whose hands sculpted the respected Venus of Vestonice, or builders of fortresses, castles and chateaux's, whose legacy may be admired today wherever you go, all left a countryside of unusual beauty and harmony. And if we tell you that in the very neighborhood is another, no less admired, domain, the Lednice-Valtice area, registered in 1996 with the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, you will surely admit that this is a site worth exploring. We can start together right in Palava.

Palava on the UNESCO list

Welcome to Palava, whose limestone massif panorama, which can hardly be overlooked, rises sharply on the Northern edge of ancient Mikulov, and whose highest peak, Devin, climbs up to 550 meters above the sea level. After several kilometers, the ridges drop headlong beneath the waters of the Novomlynske Reservoir. But the view of the panorama shaped like a lizard or a reclining maid, as it is often perceived, is not all that is fascinating; we should not miss the many natural reserves and castle ruins. Palava truly hosts a great number of nature reserves which are divided, according to their importance, into the categories of National Nature Reserves, Nature Reserves, and National Monuments. Some of the best known National Nature Reserves are Devin and Tabulova, or Krive jezero ("Crooked Lake") below Palava. And the castles we mentioned? Almost every peak at Palava has its own - Devicky, Sirotci hradek, Novy hrad. It is not only the reserves that are protected - more than 83m² of this exeptional territory have beel held as Protected Landscape since 1976 for their unique nature; since 1986, the whole area has taken pride in being one of the UNESCO biosphere reserves. Palava is generous to connoisseurs of wildlife as well as to those who long for new experiences or active relaxing. A network of hiking and cycling routes and educational trails, both less strenuous and more demanding, but always well marked, has been prepared for you. The newest of these is the Viticulture route, which will bring you, maybe a little tired, but definitely satisfied, back to the place from which Palava rises - ancient Mikulov.

The ancient wine-growing Town of Mikulov
The tour of Mikulov can be started from any place - maybe from the chateaux which is, together with Holy Hill, Mikulov's most important feature, and which reminds us of the glorious times when Mikulov was effectively the capitol of Moravia. But after all, Mikulov is a capital even today, a capital of wine-growing. This is due not just to the fact that Mikulov gave its name to the surrounding wine-growing area, but also to the viticulture museum at the chateaux which contains a giant wine vat, which can hold, as the story has it, an entire orchestra, including its conductor. However, it would be better for you to have some music played while you sip wine outside the chateaux in any of the reputable wine bars. First, though, you have to pass through the historical square, a true glory of Mikulov. A well-preserved medieval town center, protected as an Urban Heritage Reserve, gives you the feeling that the town esteems its traditions and treasures its memories. The best proofs of this are the wonderfully reconstructed houses, such as the House of Knights, decorated with murals; the Dietrichstein Crypt, restored and open to the public from 2001; or the trail leading round the Jewish monuments of the town, opened in 2000. In Mikulov, traditions will surround you wherever you go and whenever you come. The busiest times, however, are summer and autumn, the climax to countless cultural events, an essential part of live in Mikulov. Summertime attracts artists, who create works during the annual Fine Art Symposium "Workshop"; and musicians, who come to take part in the International Guitar Festival; autumn, with its traditional Mikulov Vintage Fair, is best for all lovers of wine and viticulture. Greetings!

The Pasohlavky Recreational Area
You will certainly enjoy a real holiday in the warmest recreational area in the country. Indeed, the ways of spending your holiday here are many. All of them, though. have something in common - water. In separate lagoons you can bathe in both water and sunlight, row in a boat or plough the surface on peddles. Windsurfing across the extensive expanse of water will surely prove no problem for those with more courage. And if you are not certain, you can easily get some help from any of the experienced instructors at the local windsurfing school. But windsurfing is not the last item on the list of sports you can do here. The recreational area offers a large number of sports grounds, tennis courts, and a miniature golf park. Particular to the surroundings of Pasohlavky are the almost unlimited opportunities for fishing. The recreational area is also prepared for cyclists. The "Amber" long-distance biking route, leading as far as Vienna, passes nearby. On the other hand, the newly-developed "Around ATC Merkur" route, starting at the camp premises, will show you around the adjacent surroundings. In addition to buying maps, tourist guides, and other souvenirs, in the camp you can also rent a bike for your trip. ATC Merkur, together with the municipality of Pasohlavky, will also provide you with all the services necessary to ensure you have a pleasurable holiday, regardless of how you come or what you have brought with you. Pleasant restaurants, wine cellars, hotels, hostels, all are ready for you. Just choose. We wish you a happy holiday.

Chateaux's, parks, follies....
The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape is a place where chateaux's and parks provide the backdrop for the living traditional culture of the Podluzi, the colorful folk architecture of the region, and widespread vineyards and orchards, to fill out a living mosaic. Let us now take a walk together through this singular "Garden of Europe".

Valtice
We begin in the south, in Valtice. The Liechtensteins acquired Valtice at the beginning of the 14th century. When they were awarded the princely status in the Austrian Empire in the  17th century, Valtice became the main family residence of the ruling Prince, remaining so until the family moved to present-day Liechtenstein in 1938. The center of the town is adorned with two jewels of Baroque architecture; the Valtice chateaux and the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built by architects Johan Bernard Fischer von Erlach, Antonio Erhard Martinelli, and Anton Johann Ospel. The period interior of the chateaux is toured by 60.000 visitors a year, and the chateaux and its park are the scene of the annual Baroque Festival, which enjoys a fine reputation among enthusiasts from all over the world. About Valtice it is said that wine grows "under the castle", a reference to its beautiful cellars, where wine has been aged for centuries. The Valtice Wine Market is a high quality exhibition of the finest wines, attracting both expert and amateur consumers and vintners. Experts of wine or in no shortage here in any case, as Valtice is the home of the oldest vintners' school in the Czech Republic. Among those educated here are sommeliers, highly-trained experts in the serving of wine, who will always recommend to you the most appropriate variety and vintage to be consumed with your meal.

Lednice
A few kilometers to the north of Valtice lies the village of Lednice, attracting large numbers of visitors from throughout the world.
Its history is also strongly influenced by the Liechtensteins, who first came here in the 13th century. After Valtice became their main residence, the Lednice chateaux was made into their summer palace. The chateaux and park in Lednice are visited by almost 300.000 guests a year. The chateaux is an excellent example of English Neo-Gothic architecture, having acquired its present appearance around 1850 under builders Jiri Wingelmuller and Johann Heidrich. The extravagant interior of the chateaux is decorated by rich wood carvings, including an enormous stairway carved from a single massive oak tree. The chateaux also houses a permanent exhibition of the National Agriculture Museum, and the large Malawi aquarium, located in the area of the former stables. The chateau regularly hosts important political and cultural events, such as the signing of international treaties, conferences, and concerts of classical music. Another of the most notable parts of the chateaux is an impressive and very large palm greenhouse, built in 1843 - 1854. The chateaux park is the work of horticulturist Bernard Petri and Josef van der schot: perhaps the best vantage point from which to gain an overall sense of the layout of the park is the top of the minaret. The park has been open to the public since 1800, and is especially notable for its collection of North American trees, and its avian life. Here many rare species can be seen from up close. Don't forget your binoculars, however. They will be handy when sailing down the Dyje River in the Chateaux Park or when riding a horse in the local Hippo club. Maintenance of the park requires great efforts, and a wealth of specialized knowledge. Fortunately, the horticulture college founded in Lednice in 1895 is today part of Mendel Agricultural University in Brno, so it seems that the future of the Lednice park and gardens is in good hands.
