Traveling
by bicycle
Bicycle tourism has become a definite trend of the day and the Czech
Republic offers a plethora of tourist destinations that are easily
manageable on bicycle. Road and mountain bicycles can be hired and
accommodation and catering of various categories are available in the main
tourist centers as well as in towns and on special routes. Special maps of
cycle ways can be purchased from book shops, information centers and
numerous small vendors.
About some routes
Czech and Moravian long-distance cycle ways are
connected to the network of EUROVELO European trails. The first
long-distance route to be opened was a cycle way that connected two
European capital cities, namely Prague and Vienna. It was built with the
assistance of the Greenways organization, after which it was also named.
There is the Moravian long-distance cycling trail linked to Polish cycle ways
in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains. Running along the
stream of the River Morava, the cycling trail leads as far as the Austrian
border to be connected, near Valtice, to Austrian cycle ways heading for
Vienna. Cycle ways also run along both sides of the Czech-Austrian border.
Another long-distance cycling trail goes around Lake Lipno, the largest
expanse of water to be found in Sumava (South Czech). It links to a cycling highway
running through the Sumava.
